UHF and HF/NFC in brief

UHF RFID (EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-6C) dominates where fast multi-tag reads and longer range matter: warehouse, logistics, retail, asset tracking. HF/NFC (ISO 14443 / ISO 15693) fits close-range use — access control, person ID, smartphone scenarios. The choice follows read geometry, metal and liquids, and how operators work — not fashion.

Metal detunes a plain UHF label and liquids absorb the wave — so on-metal or specialty tags matter as much as the reader. The shortest path to certainty is a test on target objects, not a catalog-only decision.

  • UHF: inventory, gates, handhelds, bulk reads.
  • HF/NFC: cards, fobs, wristbands, close precise reads.
  • On-metal / laundry / industrial: when the environment breaks a plain label.

When to start with a pilot

A pilot makes sense when the process is repeatable and a wrong tag or antenna costs more than a short test. Typical scope: one site or object class, a few tag variants, read-rate and cycle-time measurements, then a go / no-go before a large order. That avoids buying thousands of media mismatched to metal, film or wash cycles.

Useful inputs: process description, mount photos, target KPIs, and whether you need EPC encoding plus a serialization report. From that we assemble a test kit and suggest read settings for a handheld or fixed station.

  • Measure time and read quality before changing the process at scale.
  • Test at least two tag builds on real objects.
  • Agree the data format (EPC/UID) before integration.

What comes after technology selection

Once technology and tags fit, the next step is data hygiene and integration: ID mapping, exception rules and operator training.
